When Girlfriend first arrived at the rescue, we thought we were dealing with a pregnant pup. But within moments, we realized something was terribly wrong. She wasn’t carrying puppies—she was struggling to breathe, barely able to walk, and in heart failure, most likely caused by severe heartworm disease.
For years, Girlfriend was a neighborhood dog—kind people made sure she had food and water, but no one claimed her as their own. When her condition began to deteriorate, those same neighbors knew she needed help, and fast. Thankfully, our amazing vet team was able to stabilize her, but the damage was already done. This is why we stress the importance of heartworm prevention—this disease is preventable.
Though she survived, Girlfriend will require multiple medications for the rest of her life. But don’t let that fool you—she’s a fighter, and she still has so much love to give!
Girlfriend is looking for a special home where she can be the only pet—no dogs or cats—where she can enjoy peace, love, and all the attention she deserves. She does great with calmer kids over 10, who can match her gentle spirit.
She may have had a rough past, but we know there’s a loving home out there for this sweet girl. Please share to help Girlfriend find her happily ever after!
