Mare is a beautiful 6-year-old Lab mix whose story started on the streets.
About four years ago, Mare was found running loose in a rough neighborhood with her three puppies. She had been surviving on her own, doing everything she could to keep her babies safe and fed. The people around her hadn’t always been kind, so earning her trust wasn’t easy. It took about a week before she finally allowed herself to be rescued, and then we had to earn the trust of her puppies, too.
But through everything, Mare was an incredible mama. Her puppies eventually went on transport and found amazing, loving homes. Now, after spending so much of her life taking care of everyone else, it’s Mare’s turn.
When Mare first came to us, she wasn’t comfortable around other dogs. After surviving as a stray and having to compete for food and protect her babies, she had learned that unfamiliar dogs weren’t necessarily friends. But Mare has come SO far. With time, patience, and lots of socialization, she has learned that other dogs can actually be pretty great. She now does well with calmer, more submissive dogs and has discovered that life doesn’t always have to be about survival.
And Mare has definitely developed an appreciation for the finer things in life. Sunbathing, rolling onto her back for love, hanging out with her people, and enjoying a calm, comfortable life.
Mare absolutely loves people and is incredibly sweet. She’s crate trained, house trained, and because she’s a little more mature, she has that wonderful calmer energy that makes her such an easy companion. She spent her early years surviving. She raised her babies and watched them find their families. Now we want Mare to finally know what it feels like to be the one who gets chosen.
