Yule came to us in December 2022.
At 4 a.m., on one of the coldest nights of the year, a car pulled up.
A wire crate was dragged from the back of the vehicle and left on our sidewalk. Inside was Yule.
No food.
No water.
Completely emaciated.
Shaking.
Terrified.
If abandonment has a sound, it was the silence after that car drove away.
It wasn’t until we came into work the next morning when out of the corner of our eye we spotted the corner of his crate.
When we approached him, he was frozen, not just from the cold, but from fear. It took patience. Soft voices. Slow movements. Gentle reassurance. Eventually, we were able to get him out of the crate and inside where it was warm. And that’s when we saw it. Under the fear was a young dog who wanted to trust.
Yule warmed up quickly to staff once he realized he was safe. He began leaning into touch. Watching us with cautious hope instead of panic. Learning that hands could bring comfort instead of harm. But trauma doesn’t disappear overnight.
Yule is still extremely shy in new situations. He struggles with anxiety. He needs a quiet, predictable home. One that understands that healing isn’t linear and that his past shaped him.
He needs someone patient.
Someone gentle.
Someone who won’t hold his fear against him.
Because once Yule bonds with you? He bonds deeply. He gives his whole heart.
He’s a middle aged guy, that still enjoys being active. He thrives with enrichment and routine. And when he knows you love him, he gives you everything in return.
Yule didn’t deserve how his story started, but he deserves a beautiful next chapter. If you can be the quiet, steady place where he can finally exhale, Yule is waiting.
